Our wedding film love story
How did you guys meet?
We met through a common friend. It turned out we were both renting a stone throw away from each other. After our first date it was hard to keep apart for too long!
Tell me a bit about the two of you, what do you guys do? How do you spend your time?
We live together in Greenwich and both work in central London. Mark is a Software Engineer; Dan is in Financial Services.
Before the COVID days we would enjoy travelling around either on small city breaks across Europe or going on larger international trips together. As we have lived together for more than 4-5 years, we would often meet up with friends, go shopping and dining out, going to the theatre and museums as a couple. London is pretty convenient really.
Mark often finds himself trying to lose weight either through running or various other workouts on weekday evenings, Dan enjoys singing in a choir before Covid, and now practices piano when not studying or at work. We are both fairly relaxed and are quite happy staying at home to enjoy reading/listening to audio books on dark/cold days. Mark is also slowly learning Chinese on his onwards struggle to communicate with Dan’s family! Mark enjoys cooking hearty meals, both British and Chinese cuisines.
How did the proposal go down? (all the gushy details, I love this bit!)
Dan’s family were due to leave London the next day, after a vacation with us. It happened to be the night of the mid-Autumn festival. This is normally a great time for feasting and spending time together as a family in Chinese tradition. In fact, it is the second most important Chinese holiday after the Chinese New Year. The atmosphere was great in the house, I felt that it was a good opportunity and I spontaneously proposed later that evening at home, sharing the moment with her family. She said yes and here we are!
How did you choose your wedding venue(s)?
We always wanted a ‘castle wedding’ and of all the venues with that castle feel that we visited, near and far, Ashridge really stood out. It was an autumn day and Ashridge House looked stunning at first sight. We loved the staircase, the dining room and the old library, the forestry and the deer surrounding the estate really drew us. Some other venues we saw were nowhere near as impressive to us. Also, the venue was still fairly convenient for us and guests.
What sort of experience do you want your guests to have?
This is a small wedding with quite a few friends attending who will likely be not sure how to conduct themselves during the current times. We really want guests to feel relaxed and enjoy themselves however they can. The ceremony will have a fairly traditional feel, but we want guests to feel like they are not restricted and speak to anyone they can. In terms of filming, as an intimate wedding, most guests will likely gravitate towards each of our rooms for getting ready in.
Can you describe some of the details and stylings, does your wedding have a theme?
No theme as such. It is Christmas and the venue will be decorated of course. Featuring this as part of the film is a nice addition, although we don’t want it to be overbearing. If there was a theme, it would be a Winter wedding theme. We are supplementing the winter/Christmas feel where possible.
What was the hardest decision during the planning?
Where do I start!? We all decided a month back Dan’s parents would be unable to attend the wedding due to the difficulties of travelling from China. That was probably the hardest. Logistically speaking, deciding on our venue and the guest list has been the next most difficult thing to decide on. We should probably also add that whether to have a wedding at all during Covid was not an easy one.
What advice would you give to couples planning a wedding?
Start early, no time like the present. Get the big items done away with asap.
