Our wedding film love story

How did you guys meet?

We both met in the last week of University (University College London) in July 2012 at a friend’s birthday party (Dominic, a groomsman). That chance interaction ignited a spark, and everything began from there!

Tell me a bit about the two of you, what do you guys do? How do you spend your time?

Shaline is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Cambridge, researching Parkinson’s Disease. And can often be found in a lab!

Jas is a civil servant in the Cabinet Office, currently working on the UN COP26 Climate Summit which just finished in Glasgow (exhausting!)

We can often be found watching films, on the cricket pitch or hanging out with family and friends! As two families from different cultures (Sikh and Muslim), we’ve had quite the personal journey to get to this point!

How did the proposal go down? (All the gushy details, I love this bit!)

All was very nearly a complete surprise! I’d planned for the proposal to take place at the Hampstead Hill Garden and Pergola. This is a place that has special memories for us as a couple, both the highs and lows in our journey!

I took Shaline to the ideal spot, and it was all completely silent, so all was on track. Then a random old guy appeared from nowhere to give me a nervous look, which got Shaline suspicious. I tried to point Shaline in another direction, who then asked ‘What’s going on’.

Myself bottling it, went down on one knee and asked Shaline to marry me (the original speech I’d planned to give was delivered later). Then to her complete surprise, her best friend Alex (a bridesmaid) and her partner Ben turned up from behind the bushes to take photos and crack open a bottle of Champers. We then proceeded to the Freemasons Arms in Hampstead for a celebratory meal – a memorable day indeed.

How did you choose your wedding venue(s)?

We ideally wanted the wedding in France, but COVID and Brexit complicated the planning somewhat.

We chose Denbies as that is a location that has significance and memories for us as a couple. And on a jovial note, on a trip there in 2015, a few of our friends, in particular Holly (a bridesmaid) and Jose, joked we should get married there!

What sort of experience do you want your guests to have?

As a couple, we consider our friends coming as an extension of our personal family. We wanted our loved ones to have a relaxed, fun and memorable day with us!

Can you describe some of the details and stylings, does your wedding have a theme?

Neutral colours

What was the hardest decision during the planning?

Who to invite, particularly as we have large families!

What advice would you give to couples planning a wedding?

Be clear as a couple what you both have in mind, and roles and responsibilities upfront!
