Why the role of the father of the bride is so important
We all know the tradition – the father of the bride pays for the wedding, but when you think about it his role is so much more than just that. While he might not be involved with a lot of the preparations leading up to your wedding, on the day he’ll be the one walking the bride down the aisle, hosting the reception and even keeping everyone calm and happy.
So, to celebrate Father’s Day and all the great dads out there, we take a look at the amazing role the father of the bride plays on the big day.
- Contributes to the wedding cost
In the old days the father of the bride was expected to pay for the whole wedding, but nowadays more and more couples are saving for the big day themselves and quite often the groom’s parents will also help out.
If your parents do want to contribute, but aren’t sure how much, why not ask them to pay for certain things? This could be your wedding dress, cake or even your wedding videographer. A lot of people worry hiring a wedding videographer is too expensive, but what could be better than having a lasting memory of your day you can watch time and time again? That’s what makes it the perfect wedding day gift from loving parents.
- Ensures the bride arrives safely at the wedding venue
There is something undeniably special about those final moments before you get married. Putting the final touches to your hair and make-up surrounded by your closest friends, the moment your father sees you in your wedding dress for the first time, and the journey with him to the wedding venue. This is the perfect time for you to share some special, private moments together as well as calming each other’s nerves.
Just remember to ask your wedding videographer to discreetly capture these special moments so you can look back on them in years to come.
- Walks the bride down the aisle
The tradition of the father of the bride walking his daughter down the aisle actually dates back to the 1500s when marriages were considered to be more of a business transaction.
In a time when daughters were used to settle debts or as a way of elevating the status of the family, ‘giving away’ represented the transfer of ownership from one family to another.
Nowadays this tradition is a truly special father-daughter moment making it one of the most important roles of the whole day.
- Hosts the reception
As you move from wedding to reception, a receiving line is a great way of ensuring you get to say hi to everyone. Traditionally, the father of the bride will start the line followed by the newlyweds and then the groom’s parents. It’s also a great way of thanking dad for making the day so special.
- Gives the first speech
The first speech of the night is always the most important, so it’s fitting the father of the bride should start. It gives him the chance to thank all the guests for coming, to welcome the groom into the family and also to tell a couple of amusing stories about the bride when she was a little girl.
Speeches always go past so fast, it can be difficult to remember what was said, but with a wedding film you can relive it time and time again.
- Dances with his daughter
While the first dance is undoubtedly important, so is the father-daughter dance and it’s a moment you’ll both remember forever.
Just like your first dance, you should choose a song that has meaning for both of you and also practise beforehand. It’s a wonderful way to have a few quality moments together during the day.
Why you should get a cinematic wedding film
Weddings are special for so many reasons, which is why capturing your big day on film is such a good investment. Not only will you be able to share it with anyone who was unable to attend, but you will also be able to look back on all those special moments you had with your father.
